Not all of us get an opportunity to visit the countries of our liking, but a short vacation to Italy is certainly possible to try some authentic Italian dishes, right here, in Gurgaon.

If you wish to take a gastronomical ride across Italian flavours, then Italiano might just be the right place for you. Currently having 3 branches in Gurgaon, Italiano was founded in the year 2002 with the aim of changing peoples perception about Italian cuisine, that it revolves around pizzas and pastas. The menu at Italiano offers not only pastas and pizzas, but soups, salads and appetisers as well.

The cyber hub branch happened to be my refuge last Sunday afteroon. Catering predominantly to corporate crowd during weekdays, I was impressed to see it full even on a late sunday afternoon, thereby increasing my expectations from the not so well rated restaurant.

A place where interiors are inspired by warmth and vibrancy, Italiano offers both, indoor and outdoor seating. While the al fresco seating is marked by light color tones, white chairs and green plants under umbrellas, the indoor seating has wooden hues predominant with comfortable sofas and some interesting artifacts.

Winter afternoon called for al fresco dining under the sun and that is what was chosen. I started with the refreshing pomegranate basil dream, that had a subtle touch and went well with the fresh and crunchy tomato bruschetta, which was topped with mozzarella and olive oil. Next came the vegetarian and non vegetarian platters.

Both the platters were accompanied along with aioli, peanut dip and salsa. While my pick from the vegetarian platter would be the crunchy and cheesy vegetable tart, the crispy chicken strips and pesto chicken skewers were the winners from the non veg platter, and went well with the peanut dip.

The salads comprised of- Panzanella– a warm vegetarian salad made with onion, tomato and rocket leaves along with crunchy tuscan bread, Caesar con Pollo or chicken caesar salad and the Prawn and ginger salad. Among the three, the prawn and ginger salad clearly stood out because of the beautiful blend of flavours which didn’t overpower the sweetness of the prawns.

I enjoyed the simple penne arrabiata, but was a bit disappointed with the spaghetti alfredo and felt that it had gone a bit dry. It was the lasagna con pollo that had made up for the spaghetti alfredo.

Both the pizzas looked and tasted delicious. Thin crust and topped with flavoursome toppings, pizzas were not something that I would have missed onto. Strangely enough, the vegetarian pizza i.e. primevera picante clearly had an upper hand in terms of flavour and presentation when compared to the non veg pizza i.e. pollo!pollo!pollo!

For the mains, I’d recommend Pollo al Cartoccio– well baked and juicy chicken breast stuffed with spinach and mushroom served along with roasted vegetables and rosemary potatoes, for the non vegetarians and for the vegetarians, Alla Griglia Cottage Cheese Bistecca– grilled cottage cheese stuffed with buttered vegetables and topped with cheesy paprika sauce, would be a good choice.

After all this debauchery, the desserts had to be contemplated. Being at an italian restaurant, it was essential to try the tiramisu, and it was no less than a treat for my tastebuds. But it was the velvety smooth blueberry cheesecake that stole the show and marked the success of my meal at Italiano. This is going to bring me back soon.

Overall, my experience at Italiano turned out to be a good one. While the food did justice, I’d like to have an improved service next time I visit, in order to leave no room for complaints. Even after binging onto some delicious Italian dishes, I felt light and satiated, not feeling the guilt of having eaten too much.
