When life gives you limes, make margaritas!
After all, there’s nothing quite like this refreshing tequila-based cocktail that’s perfect for a sunny afternoon.
Prepared with tequila, triple sec and fresh lime juice, this concoction is served in a salted rim glass that has the name of the drink itself. While the origins of this classic are ambiguous, most claim that it saw its birth in Mexico and became popular around the 1930s during the prohibition era. Now there’s room for speculation of its origin, there’s no room for defying that nothing beats a well-made margarita. And even though the recipe is fuss-free to follow, a little here and there, and you’ll be left with a below-par cocktail and hangover.
But there’s no room for below-par margaritas at the ongoing “Margarita Without a Straw” promotion at Monkey Bar, Vasant Kunj. In lieu of the International Margarita Day on 22nd February, Monkey Bar has come up with a special margarita menu that is available until 25th February.
The menu comprises of five interesting variations of the classic cocktail, just taken up a notch. If originality is what you seek, opt for the Gondhoraj Libre, that has all the quintessential elements of a good margarita, only replacing regular lime with its more fragrant Bengali counterpart. If you like sour notes, then the Kokum Poncho and Mangaa Rita should be your go-to drinks. Kokum Poncho has the bitter undertone of kokum accentuated with the freshness of ginger. They say kokum helps to improve your appetite, so make this your first drink, only to amp up your capacity to eat(and drink!). But if I had to pick a favourite, it’ll have to be the Tamarita. I am a pro spicy drinks person, and this just hit the mark for me. This tamarind infused sweet and sour margarita had a kick of spicy green chillies that activated my taste buds like no other. Needless to say, a must have.
Good drinks require good accompaniments and Monkey Bar has ensured that you get the best of both, drinks and food at the ongoing promotion. There are three options to choose from: Dips and Chips, Quesadillas and Chalupas, which are perfect to binge on to while you chug down a pitcher or two of margarita.
The Dips and Chips comprise of nachos, sweet potato fries and pita bread, served with tequila guacamole, roasted tomato salsa and chipotle sour cream. Quesadillas have an option of both, vegetarian and non-vegetarian. I obviously took the non-vegetarian one with lime chicken and oh, was it good. Though my favourite amongst the three has to be the Chicken and Spiked Guacamole Chalupa. Chicken cooked with albuquerque sauce, topped with guac and egg in a crispy tart-like shell, that didn’t disintegrate while munching on. The sweet, spicy, tangy notes of this dish were like an explosion of flavours in my mouth, making it the undisputed winner.
