The moment I think about Italian food my mind is raided by images of colourful food, celebrating fresh ingredients, each shining through the meal without losing its individual flavour identity, made with oodles and oodles of love.
And the place that is perfectly penning down those beautiful images by translating them into beautiful Italian delicacies made with an interesting twist is Jamie’s Italian. With Jamie Oliver, a world-renowned celebrity chef, known for making hearty and wholesome food, at the helm, you know that you’ve landed yourself at the right spot for a great culinary journey to Italy.
With a colourful pictorial menu at disposal, Jamie’s Italian was tempting me to let loose of all reigns and indulge. To which, I followed suit by starting off the meal with the non-vegetarian epic plank. Consisting of a variety of appetisers, the plank is a great way to relish a variety of antipasti. While I enjoyed the lamb meatball, chicken wings and the gnocchi with cheese fonduta, it will be the grilled tiger prawns, cooked in garlic and olive oil, topped with a little fresh pesto, that I’d bet my money on. Delicious, to say the least.
After having being told that they make their pasta in-house, I knew I had to give it a shot, to distinguish from the pre-packaged pasta available elsewhere. I opted for the famous prawn linguine and the ravioli mezzaluna. Tossed in a fresh tomato sauce along with perfectly cooked shrimps and served atop with rocket leaves, their prawn linguine, had a mellow undertone of fennel and deserves to be in the limelight that it shines in. Though the limelight could easily be shared with the delicious ravioli, that was studded with whipped buffalo ricotta and spinach, tossed in a tomato sauce and served with fresh basil and bocconcini.
The Italian fish and chips were next to follow. Golden brown and crisp on the outside, moist and perfectly cooked on the inside, the beer-battered fish served along with a pile of fries, mushy peas and their in-house tartar sauce is not something that you’d want to miss on to. Speaking of which, coming here and not having pizza would be a sin, one, which I did not commit. I opted for the pizza that Jamie has dedicated to his wife, The Julietta. Simplicity at its best, the pizza was topped with slow roasted tomatoes, basil, mozzarella and parmesan cheese, and was nothing short of delicious.
To mark a stamp of success on the toothsome dishes that I had relished, I ordered their epic chocolate brownie and molten chocolate praline pudding. The brownie, dark and squidgy, just the way I like it, was topped with a scoop of luscious salted caramel ice cream and glazed popcorn that added crunch. The piece de resistance had to be the molten chocolate pudding that oozed out the praline centre when cut. Balancing the warm with the cold vanilla bean ice cream and adding crunch with bits of praline made the dessert texturally balanced, and of course, a must have!
Confession: Overall, my experience at Jamie’s turned out to be way better than expected, making it difficult for me to pick something that didn’t go right. The place truly celebrates fresh ingredients by doing all of their sauces(even ketchup) and pasta, in-house. The menu has ample options to ensure that no palate does dissatisfied and they even do a small portion of a couple of dishes, if you don’t have as big an appetite. Delicious food, chic ambience and swift service, make Jamie’s Italian a must-visit place!
